Then you may be a good candidate for Job Corps’ Bricklayer, Pre-Apprentice training area.

Pre-apprenticeships are focused on preparing students for a successful experience in a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). That means your hands-on training will be based on industry standards in order to prepare you for high-skill, quality employment.    

On the job, you will ...

  • Build and repair walls, fireplaces and other structures with brick or stone 
  • Use blueprints or drawings and basic math to calculate materials needed for a project 
  • Mix and clean excess mortar, grout and/or cement 
  • Use power tools to clean and polish surfaces 

Some of the career options you will have ...

Most Bricklayer Job Corps graduates find careers as brick masons, cement masons, terrazzo workers, plasterers and stucco masons.   

Students should also consider pursuing Advanced Cement Masonry and other Advanced Training programs at Job Corps as part of their career pathway. 

The credentials you will earn ...

The Bricklayer, Pre-Apprentice program, you can earn industry-recognized credentials from the International Masonry Institute (IMI) and certifications in construction safety from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). 

Students should also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of the program. 

What you’ll need to start training ...

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent (can be earned at all Job Corps centers) 
  • Completion of all introductory and career preparation courses 
  • Passing scores on all written and performance tests 
  • Meet academic (math and reading) requirements

Marty Asprelli is a Tile Setting Instructor at the Denison Job Corps Center. He has been a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers for over a decade. He has worked as a job foreman on multiple job sites throughout Florida, Kansas City and Missouri. 
Burt Rife
Burt Rife
Burt Rife is a Bricklaying Instructor at the Denison Job Corps Center. Prior to working for Job Corps, Burt worked as a job foreman on many job sites through the state of Nebraska. He has been a member of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 15 MO/KS/NE Union for 10 years.
