Career Training

In addition to academic training, Denison Job Corps provides career technical training in the following vocational trades:

After completing their career technical training, students can participate in advanced training programs.

Brick Masonry

Taught by the International Masonry Institute, students in this training learn procedures for laying out block, brick, and composite walls. They also learn how to mix and spread mortar and build projects from printed directions and drawings. Students are taught OSHA rules and practices about job site safety. A pre-apprentice program is also available.

Carpentry

In this pre-apprentice program taught by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, students gain the following carpentry skills: construction techniques, concrete forms, joist and sub-flooring, walls and partitions, rafters and trusses, roofing, siding and exterior trims, doors and windows, drywall, paneling, ladders, and scaffolding.

Culinary Arts

Students in Culinary Arts training learn about food preparation, serving, displaying, baking, and restaurant management. Students also gain certifications in safety and sanitation. Graduates of this training can begin careers as pantry cooks, station cooks, or a hotel/restaurant cooks.

Facility Maintenance

In this pre-apprentice program taught by the Home Builders Institute, students learn safe usage of hand tools and power tools, material handling, and trade terminology. They also gain skills in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, dry-walling, painting, landscaping, floor covering, concrete and masonry, and environmental control.

Health Occupations

Students in the Health Occupations program train to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). This training includes 60 hours of hands-on clinical experience at local health care facilities. To enroll in this program, students must pass a criminal background check with no records of assaults or other violent incidents.

Medical Administration

Students in this program learn office procedures, computer basics, calculator basics, typing skills, business English, filing, mailing, and keyboarding. Students are also get hands-on training on modern computers and office machines. Graduates of this training achieve Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certification and can begin careers as data entry clerks or office assistants.

Painting

In this pre-apprentice program taught by the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), students learn basic entry level skills in painting and drywall finishing (brush, roll, spraying, and texturing). They also learn many aspects of safety including the use of respirators, ladder and scaffolding safety.

Protective Services

To enroll in Protective Services training, students must pass a criminal background check with no records of assaults or other violent incidents. Students in this program train for employment in law enforcement, prison systems, and security positions in banks, malls, and casinos. Students learn about investigations, report writing, fire protection and self defense. This training involves physical training as well as hands-on training in the areas of crime scene investigation, fire drills, vehicle accident reports, bomb threats, and internal threats.

Welding

Students in this program train in a modern welding shop with up-to-date equipment. Students are trained in shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux core arc welding (FCAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW).

Advanced Training

Our center offers college programs to our students in conjunction with Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) and Indian Hills Community College (IHCC). Students enrolled in these programs live on our campus and have all their major college expenses covered, including tuition, lab fees, and books.

Programs offered by WITCC

Auto Mechanics is a one year diploma program designed to develop entry-level auto mechanic skills. Students in this training receive extensive hands-on training in engine overhaul, front end alignment, brake service, ignition systems, and electronic control systems. All training materials are based on Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) standards and taught by A.S.E. certified instructors.

Practical Nursing (PN) is a diploma program where students learn current nursing theory through comprehensive class and laboratory sessions at cooperating clinical agencies. The program prepares students to administer care to patients of all ages with predictable needs under supervision of a registered nurse or physician. The PN program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) and is approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing.

Truck Driving is a three month certificate course designed to prepare students for over-the-road tractor-trailer driver employment. Training consists of classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel experience in trucks used by the transportation industry.

Programs offered by IHCC

The Health Unit Coordinator program is a six month diploma program that prepares students for a career in a hospital, a skilled nursing facility, an insurance company, a clinic, or a health maintenance organization. As Health Unit Coordinators (unit clerk/secretary), students work closely with health professionals by providing support to nursing service and other departments in the collection and distribution of patient data.
